Yes your dad is correct, it will rust again..... Do you have a wire wheel? If not go get one that will fit inside an electric drill. $2-$5 at local hardware store. Instead of sanding wire wheel it. While your at the hardware store pick up 2 cans of Rustoleom BBq paint. It is a dull black made for your bbq's so it high resistant heat. the black is a nice match to the old exhaust color. Wire wheel the whole thing so when you paint it. it goes on nice and smooth. you need several layers....allow to dry ....you will be surprised how nice it looks..:D

I agree with Jenn i would wire wheel it. And also i might add that automotive stores sell high temp paint for motors. And you can get it in different colors. I have had a little better luck with it because it can take heat up to like 2000 degrees. And it tends to have less discoloration and lasts longer. I use it on my 2-stroke exhausts to keep them clean and from not rusting.

I've refinished many exhaust systems in the last couple years- both headpipes, midpipes and mufflers. The auto parts stores carry a couple different types of paint. DON'T get the one for motors- it's rated to about 700 degrees. They've also got one for EXHAUST that's rated to 1200 degrees. I have a friend with a sandblast cabinet that I use on the thing first. Works AWESOME! Then I paint them up. They smell funny the first couple times you ride them as the paint cures. But then, they look perfect. I don't ride a lot in the mud, etc., but I still haven't had the paint burn off or anything like that.
