Hey can I get some help on fine-tuning my carb on my '85 250R?The bike is all original with the exception of a DG silencer.I took carb apart and ONLY cleaned it out.Now i put it back on and with the choke ON I get lower RPM than with it off.I turn choke off and motor winds out like it's gonna blow up.I didn't do a top end on it or anything and will do a starting fluid around the gasket test later when I can get it to idle with the choke off.I have the idle adjust screw 2 turns out with the clip in the center on the 5 positions on the needle. Also what is the screw that is on the same side as the idle adjust screw that is at the base of the intake side? And what's the recommended adjustment for that.I have a Honda factory manual but don 't know where it is so all I need is to get this carb adjusted and I can get back to riding.THANKXXXXXXXXXX:wtf:

i run a mikuni (that i know nothing about) on my r so i am not sure about the screw. look in the tech section on this site. there is a great write up that i used to tune my 84 250r. the carb on the 84 and 85 are about the same. 85 is just a little bigger.

BTW i used to live in orlando. i went to the navy nuclear power school there for a year :headbang: daytona rocks

Yeah, cool I found this link that might help someone else on the whole carb tuning thing,it is http://justkdx.dirtrider.net/printcarbtuning.html. After reading this it is real easy. Now all I need to know is what size the stock main jet is for the 85 250R main jet so I know where to start from. 200X Basket:I drove for the trucking company that hauled all the equipment out of the Navy base.I took a set of doubles over and swapped out with a loaded set of trailers about 5 times.they had alot of stuff to move.We even had a special trip that hauled all the nuke plans that was followed by 2 special agents during travel.I heard that the trailers had all the nuke plans on them and were guarded very heavily.I guess they tore down the whole complex for a housing project for seniors

Yeah it was kind of wild being able to drive all over the grass in a semi.I was surprised when I heard there was a McDonalds in there. We used to checkin at they guard shack and then somebody would come over and get us.

To start with, the stock main is a 142 with the clip in the 2nd groove and the air screw 2 turns out. The air screw is the one that you were asking about at the lower right. Maybe you were confusing the idle speed screw with the air screw. There is no recommended setting(2 turns out?) for the idle speed screw. If it was running OK before the cleaning, then it's not a setting that's incorrect- something was done when you cleaned it. The first thing that came to mind was that maybe you forgot to tighten the clamp on the boot on the motor side of the carb. That would make it run lean(and fast). Another thought is that maybe some dirt got dislodged and is plugging a jet. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the info.I read about carb tuning and yeah it is the air/gas screw.I just hadn't worked on tuning a two stroke carb in a few years.I had the air screw all the way out and the excessive air was causing it to wind out.I have a tight clamp on the air boot. With the choke On it would idle lower due to the gas being allowed to motor. Thanks again,I was waiting to call the techie at Dennis Kirk because I can't see the number on the main jet.
