View Full Version : Clutch Problem 86 200X
Well my wife took a spill on her 86 200X this weekend out at Sand Lake. After all the dust settled and we made sure she was OK, I couldn't get the clutch to engage. I can shift through the gears but it won't move. The clutch lever felt stiff so I played with the cable, I put all the length back into the cable and wa able to get the trike to move but not very fast and it wouldn't shift into the other gears. I wouldnt think that a crash would cause the clutch to go bad.......Any thoughts?

Yeah I have one but you aint gonna like it.........By the way how was Sandlake??? Ok on to the the thing, if you checked all outside stuff nothing seems wrong there you need to drain your oil and pull the ride side case cover.....remove kickstarter first of course. At the very bottom, in the middle is a spring, I cant remember the name right now but if it is off track it will cause what you are explaining to happen. It is just basically sitting in there snug against its parts so a hard spill could possibly cause this to fall out or unspring. The reason i say You aint gonna like pullin the cover is when is the last time you pulled it?? you will need a new gasket possibly and really pay attention to washers and other things that will kinda just fall around as you pull it. There are 3 that are particular pills..But while you are in there go ahead and clean your oil screen or replace it and check other things. I recommend that you do not unless there is a problem pull anything else apart. inside the case of course. The spring is really easy to spot. When you put the case cover back on make sure all of the old gasket is removed.....or you will have an oil leak...I hope your wife is well.....
We went down to Sand Lake Thursday night. Friday was great riding hardly anyone was there. Saturday the wind and rain picked up, Sunday was the rain stopped and we got some good riding in. The wife is good, just a real sore hip.....She'll back riding soon.
Thanks for the tip, I will have a look at that spring and let you know my findings....Thanks

Do you seem to have full movement of the clutch slave arm(the lever the cable hooks to). I would remove the cable and feel if the arm is snug and if it pushes hard like it is really trying to disengauge the clutch. When you did get it rolling did it seem like the cluch was slipping like it was still engauged?. Just wondering if the arm got bent.
I know the spring that Jenn is talking about and i dont think it would come off from just a spill. Or is that something common on the 86/87 200x?.

God I hope not or I am in trouble....I am really tired of pulling my case cover off:lmao: But it did to just come off rather easy when I was in there, well had to of. I of course did not discover it until all snug sealed and ready to ride and whammo my Blankin clutch wasnt workin. I simply had to of touched it and it had sprung...I was very surprised cause I swear I never touch that stupid thing. But it did the almost the exact same thing 350x is discribin.

Ok i see yours came off when you had the cover off. Once the cover is in place it should stop it from being able to slide out. So it shouldnt be able to come out just from flipping it unless the whole side cover is loose.
You guys are so lucky to be able to go to Sand Lake. That must be cool!!!!!!!.
When I take the clutch cable completely off the arm does have alot of pressure, I have to use a screwdriver to get enough cable to put it back on the lever.
When I took the cable off I tried to see if it would engage and it wouldn't????????????

Does it feel like it shifts ok? Maybe just a clutch disk problem.
Or does it feel like it is hard to move through the gears?. I am wondering it it took a hit on the shifter and bent a fork on the shift drum.
Feels like it shifts fine....

Very strange. Maybe Jenn was on to something. It sounds like you are going to have to pull the side cover and check it out.
OK........I have all the bolts out that hold the right engine cover on.
What is the best or easiest way to get the cover off?
Thanks

I usually tap the cover on all sides with a rubber mallet. There are a couple of allignment pins, and the cover will be stuck. If you are very careful (and lucky) the gasket will all be stuck on one side. If there are just a couple of places where the gasket is stuck to the other side, use a exacto knife and you may be able to salvage it.
Well I took the right crankcase cover off and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary wrong.
Is there anything else I should check before I go drop it off at the shop?

These are the only things I can think of. With the case cover off have someone pull up and down on shifter to see if that spring is working. I am pretty sure tho however with the cover off your clutch will not work, but you should be able to see if things are turning in there. You should also be able to see if you cable is working on the inside case cover to.
other then that I don't know, Ive been thinkin....and I honestly don't know....even went out sat on my bike to walk myself thru what I could possibly break in a good spill...and it sounds to me you checked all the good stuff. I am sure someone else smarter then me could tell you something...hopefully. Whatever you do find please let us know....Jen
I got the trike back from the shop today and they said that the clutch was toast.....After further interagation with the wife, she told me that she was trying to get it out of the hole it was in and it all of a sudden stopped...
Oh well it's back and running. Now she wants a quad....Might be selling a nice 200X soon (new clutch).
Thanks again
