View Full Version : Gas in the oil?

Hello, I am new around here but glad to find this board. First I have a 85 185S. I seemed to run ok for about 15 minutes and then would foul the plug. After changing the plug 3 times, I opened the carb and cleaned it out good. Upon firing it up again, it ran a little better but still fouled the plug. So I am trying to figure out the problem. I noticed that there is a strong odor of gas in the crankcase oil. Could the rings be shot? How difficult is it to rebuild the top end? Are parts still available for these bikes? Thanks for any insight you can pass on.

Sounds like it is running way to rich. Make sure your airfliter is clean and dri. Or try running it for a few minutes with the airfilter off. But be careful not to suck anything in there with the filter off. Just run it around your yard on the grass where there is no dirt or dust. And see if that dosnt solve it.
This is a 85-200s carb the same eng as the 85-185 just differant size piston & jug.
# 5 is called pilot jet screw A . your air fuel mix ajustment. lightly bottom out then back out
2 & 1/4 turns is fac settings. you fine ajust from there. # 2 is the needle clip assembly. clip should be on second grove from top fac spec
will work in top but try fac setting first.

hey dads just a little tip.the 185,200s,200e,200es,200x all use the same piston.the 185 has a shorter stroke.
dident know that. THKs
I know the 185s & the 200s have the same case, but are internal parts interchangeable.
I run 250sx's . my next project is the only sx to beat a R The 300sx.

I have tried to adjust the air fuel screw but I am not having very good luck. First I am having trouble getting it to idle. I tried doing this with the air filter off but that did nothing. At this point I cant even get it to start, it just gets the plug all wet with gas and thats it. I do have spark though. I was half way wondering if the cdi could be off?

I always want to blame the cdi as well, must be because it sealed and a mystery, they are pretty tough though I find the problem comes out to be carb or mech, run a compression test this will eliminate the possibility of rings being shot, on my 2strokes I give comp test about every 10 to 20 hours run time just to monitor ring deteriation, this web address was posted by someone here, forgot who, it is very helpful in understanding your carb http://justkdx.dirtrider.net/carbtuning.html
good luck
