View Full Version : 250 es hard starting
why is it that when i got my 85 250es big red running this summer it ran great. started up instantly with the choke on and now when i go to start it today it wont startt. it turns over fast and has compression to suck the gas in and it is not fl;ooded. even with the choke on all the way it wont start.

cold weather will lean the motor out. most likely its water/ice in the gas.

#1 - put in a new spark plug
#2 - spray some starting fluid (small amount to begin with) into the air cleaner
#3 - now try it

I think Honda makes a cold weather start kit for these. I know they make one for the 250sx because I was told my old one had one on it. I never had any trouble with starting it in cold weather.

I dunno, I have a 85 250sx and cold weather starting has not been a problem. I dont know if anything was done by the previous owner to help it or not.

When it cold out they require way more fuel to run. On mine i have to readjust the idle mixture jet for winter or i will be trying all day to get it started. Try turing your idle mixture screw out about 1/2 turn and keep choking it until it starts and runs for a couple of minutes then turn the choke off. Also you might want to put some gas line antifreeze in if you think it is freezing up in the carb.
My machines will start on one try in the summer. And can take a few attemps in the winter. It is pretty common for something that is tuned for warm weather to be hard to start in the winter. I also use starting fluid to get them started when it is real cold.
Are you sure your'e getting spark?
I started mine yesterday. It was 10 about with 20 mile wind makeing it -25
after 10 min. of cranking with chocking and throutleing it fired.
If i were you i would try a new plug. I found that i have to change plugs about once a year.
i threw a new plug in there and it fired right up so i am good to go thanks
