Hey guys, I'm new to this site, I lost the ignition key for my 83 Big Red and I was wondering if you guys know how to get it running without a key. The ignition has 4 wires, Black, Green, Red, and Yellow w/red stripe. What wires would I have to put together so I can get it going? I wanna go out with my buddies tomorrow so there is no way I can get a key made now.

unplug the switch, and the trike will start with the kicker. Use the kill switch to stop it.

My diagram shows that the black and green are for killing the motor, when the switch is off, they are connected together. The kill switch connects them together when it is in the off postiion.

My Diagram shows that the other two wires are Red and Red with a white stripe. The white has probably turned yellow with age. These two wires should be bigger. Connect the Red to the Red with White to make the lights and the electric starter work.

You can replace the key with a simple switch between the Red and Red with White, as long as you use the kill switch to stop the motor.

Go rideing, have fun, be safe (wear your helmet!!)

Let me know how it turns out. I can scan in the wiring diagram if you need it.

on my 84 big red i had the neutral safety swich go bad so i just hot wired it around the igniton. instead of two bare wires hanging out we put a tractor starter button in betwwen the wires and use the decompression release to shut it off. you could get a single on/off switch to shut the ignition/batt off if your afraid of getting dead batteries. its never been a problem for me unless i dont ride often. but theres the pull rope backup.i know its kind of a cob job but itll get u back riding. isnt that the most important part anyways?

Yes, as long as it runs that IS the most important part!!

ATCnut: I went out to the garage, spliced those 2 wires together and it started right up! That info is much appreciated!!

I think I'm gonna pick up some sort of a toggle switch on monday to put between those wires so it won't drain my battery ( I assume it will drain it leaving it on all the time). Is there any specific switch I should be looking for? I'm no electrician but wouldn't there be a lot of current (or amps, not sure) going through those wires?

There is a 10 amp fuse back by the battery. So use a SPST 10 Amp switch. You can buy one at most any hardware store. As long as the lights are off, and the neutral light is off, it should not run down the battery.

I'm not too worried about the battery right now anyway as it's been sitting for a few months and it's dead. The headlight doesn't come on until the bike is running, and even still it's about as bright as a candle, and dims when the bike is revved up. My tester showed I think 1.25 volts when I checked it today. :)

If you do not care about the lights or the electric starter, all you needed to do is unplug the key. With the key unplugged, a 250sx will act like any other trike, you kick it to start, and kill it with the kill switch.

The trike will run without the two big wires (Red and Red with White) connected together. The key shorts out two little wires (black and green) when it is off, which kills the motor.

unless the stator is bad...  :thmbsdwn:

His stator has to be good. A trike will not run the spark off of the battery. There are two seperate windings on the stator, one for the ignition, and one for the lights (and battery if so equiped). If the trike runs, then the ignition part of the stator is working

to bypass the ignition switch unplug the switch use a jumper wire with a butt connector on each end that will plug in to the harness connector. plug into the big red wire and the big black wire that will bypass the ignition switch. if you put a good batt in you will have to unplug to kill power to system when you shut down.

if all else fails, use the pull startor!!!

I aws only given the one key when I bought the bike, I guess I should have had another one made, but we all learn from our mistakes eh?

Take the cylinder to a locksmith and have a new key made.
