I was able to get the beast to idle in neutral without cutting off, but it still idled very low. I turned the PILOT AIR SCREW out 3 full turns, and I screwed the THROTTLE STOP SCREW all the way in. Without doing this the trike would cut off, but I didn't think I would have to screw the screw all the way in to get to idle. Once I got it to idle I took it for a ride, and when applying full throttle it would stutter, then speed up, then almost cut off until I got out of the throttle. So basically I'm asking what do you think I need to do next to get this trike at least to be reliably rideable? Could the dirt bike exhaust the guy put on it be causing a problem? Also if it has a high compression piston in it ( I don't know what it has) and I've put pump gas and oil at 35:1 in the tank, what type of problems would that cause??

Thanks

sounds like you have dirt in the carb. and while your at cleaning the carb clean the silt bowl under the fuel shut off

but you could also make sure theres no leaks around your reed block and carb boot!!(jus a thought)!!

when cleanin carb strip it to every last piece too then soak it all!!

my uncles would do that cuz we had the gas mixed alil to rich so is like was hesitating and it would break up once we changed the gas it ran great\

and u want to run it 20:1 if ur run it 35:1 its gonna be to lean and might burn the piston

:headbang:

I think you'll be fine with 32:1. that 20:1 recommendation was from back in the day using 80s-tech oil. have you rebuilt the carb yet?

I put on a 38mm Mikuni flat valve carb:headbang: :D

dude is that the stock carb size

lets talk about what is happening

you put an oversized carb
so first thing you need to do is get it to idle

start with the air fuel screw
screw it in all the way then back it out 2 1/2 turns
then twist the throttle and screw in the ide screw all the way

all this is done after you have cleaned the carb and set the float bowl adjustment

now start the bike it should idle real fast

unscrew the idle screw slowly until the idle is close to what you want it to be

now you go back to you air fuel mix screw

slowly turn it in till it gets funky then out till its funky and find the spot in the middle of those two points

32:1 mix
nuff said

now you should take the bike out for a spin

if it runs ok from idle to 1/2 throttle
you pilot jet is ok for ya

if you can go from 1/2 to 3/4 then your needle is ok

so now crack it wide open and see how it runs

think of it this way

pilot jet = idle

needle = 1/2-3/4 throttle

main = 3/4 to full throttle

if you get it to run ok in any of these stages but not the next then change out the app jet/needle

the pilot jet can be replaced you want smaller i think cause you are using a larger carb
the needle can be replaced but try to move the clip first ot see if that helps
and the main can be replaced
look at the one you have

the test for this oen goes as follows

once you get it to riun from idle to 3/4 throttle
( pilot/needle )
then throw that throttle wide open if it craps out thats ok we ll find out why in a sec

wide open throttle 1/8 of mile if it ll let ya

kill the bike pull in the clutch and let of the gas

now pull your plug

you should be able to find a guide for reading plugs on many sites anyway it will either be wet and gooy or very dry

most likly it ll be on the gooy side
this means you need to put a smaller main
pull yours out and read the number

go get three of four for your carb in the smaller sizes

lets say you have a 150 in there
well then skip the 145 go get a 142,140 138 and start with the largest of the three

jetting can be very hard to do so dont try to do alot of things at once

one change at a time and let it run for a while to notice the change

i have seen guys make many changes to the rig at once and then never get outa the hole cause they cant identify the change that is wrong

good
luck

NO:nono: The problem was with the stock carb that came on the trike, I just put the 38mm on but haven't got a chance to try it out because I'm waiting for my twist throttle adjuster. I will see how it runs once I get the throttle together.

Thanks for the info.
