Black smoke out the pipe?

I adjusted the valve clearence on my DX and right after I did that it started smoking black smoke out the pipe, no matter what speed, it also kills plugs in about 3 hrs of riding. I think maybe a valve seal is leaking from the valve being in a diff position, becuz I had to adjust the intake alot! Any feedback is welcome, anything but negative!:mad:

You most likely gave the intake valve too much play. It is letting to much fuel in, and fouling plugs. Are you sure you had it at TDC when you adjusted them? Did you recheck them after riding to warm it up? My advise would be to redo it. You should not have to adjust them alot.

SOUNDS LIKE THE CARB TO ME,,, BLACK SMOKE IS TOOOOOO MUCH FUEL . CHECK THE CHOKE AND FLOAT LEVEL ,,,,

I agree with kasey it has to be the carb.too much play means the valve is not openning all the way and it still smokes black smoke than there is way too much gas getting to the valve to start with.if you had to adjust the valve alot it could have been masking a bigger problem.and it means you have not been doing proper maintenance. I hope this is not to negative:)

Well since I just got my trike no it hasnet gotten proper maintnence, some punk kid sold it to me.

I agree with it being too rich, but how can I check the choke? it isnt the plate type its a plunger thing and I've never worked on one?

My auto shop teacher said that the valve seal could be leaking becuase I adjusted it so much and now its wearing a different way than it was. And yes I checked the lash after riding.

So if anyone knows how to check my choke I'd appreiciat it, BTW I have the book and it doesnt say how to check it:mad: :doh: :bash:
