I adjusted the valves, and they sounded louder than before. I took the covers back off and backed off about 1/8 turn, didn't bother to line up the timing mark. I am wondering, how much clatter is too much? I have LOTS of power and absolutely no smoke, and very easy starting.

If I understood correctly, the feeler gage goes on top of the valve, below the tappet, you tighten down until you touch the feeler gage, tighten the lock nut, and you are good to go, right?

This is the way that I did it. I left the feeler gage in place until the lock nuts were tightened, then I pulled them out. Did this make a difference? Thanks very much for any input on this. - Ted

They all seem to have a little chatter in them. But what concerns me is if it wasnt set on top dead center you dont know if the valve might have been opening or closeing some when you made the adjustment. And when i adjust my valves i dont even use a feeler gauge. The thickness of the setting is like 1/3 the thickness of a piece of paper. So just make sure it is on top dead center. And turn the adjuster screw down until you just feel it touch. And then back it off just a hair and tighten down the lock nut. But also when you set your valves make sure to tighten the timing chain. That is real simply and can also add to some chatter. Both things shouldnt take more then a few minutes to do and can really add to your proformance.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did it properly the first time. Tomorrow I will do it again as you have instructed. I'll line up at TDC, adjust until I touch the valve, back off (while memorizing the slot position), and tighten the lock nut. Thanks, Ted

Now I know that this is being repetative but;

Do it right and it will serve you for a longer time, and work better. Yeah sure the paper trick will work but it only barley gets you into the ballpark and it could be way diffrent. I've had to do this before but I dident ride it like that just checked to see if the motor would run.

If it were mine I'd go buy a set of feeler gauges at your auto parts store, their only about 4 bucks for a good set. I'm pretty sure that someone here will have the proper gap for this machine, if not I'll get it for you if you want me too. Then align TDC and adjust the valves, then ride it for a while and recheck the valves for good measure.

Good luck:headbang:

Stan, I already have the feeler gages, I used them initially when I adjusted the valves. I meant to re-check them yesterday, but I did not have time. I'll try to get to it today. Best - Ted

I re-adjusted the valves this eveneng. Would anyone believe that there was almost 1/4 inch of gap above the valve when I checked it. I don't see how it was running. I was very surprised to see that much of an incorrect setting. I don't know how I got them that way to start with, but they are set correctly now. They are also very much quieter. You would not believe how loud they were, I could hear them over the muffler at high revs. Well, at least they are as they should be. I could not ask for a better machine. Thanks for the help. - Ted

that should be interesting getting that valve out through the guide someday.
i set mine like my cars:
when the ex starts to open set the intake
when the int. just closes set the ex
this is designed to assure the opposite lobe is on base circle which is what your after.

I had to even bend my .003 feeler gauge w/ some needle noses at a 45 degree angle, I found it much easier to slide in there like that. The hardest part to me is getting the stupid slotted covers off the side cover, I ended up taking the entire side cover off, and making a mark on the case there the mid of the access hole was, and lining it up w/ a string LOL...
