Has anyone tried adjusting their valves? There has to be a trick. It took me a half hour just to get the feeler gauge to fit in the intake side. This engine has very few hours on it, it has been sitting in my father's basement since I joined the navy 16 Years ago. I have most everything else tuned up and running great. When I put the engine at TDC the rockers were sitting directly on the valves but not compressing them. I would think that it would be better to leave them instead of putting the .008 mm gap in there. This to me would produce knocking. I adjusted the valve and it just did not seem right so I set it back. Engine runs fine and I don't hear any tapping. What's the deal?

Thanks,

hello, the reason there is a gap between the valve and the rocker is when the engine warms up it will expand and the gap is there to take up the gap when it gets warm. if there is not a gap when the engine gets warm it will cause the valves not close all the way which could severly damage your engine. you should go and adjust the valves accordingly. 200x driver

I thought the gap was supposed to be .003 on TDC of the compression stroke? It has to be on the compression stroke because both rockers will be loose then. The way I tell if its compression stroke is to rotate the engine it would normally rotate, it should be the next TDC after the intake valve opens, if you keep going and the exghaust vavle starts opening you've gone too far.

I got this little bent feeler gauge at the honda shop. It is bent to the right angle to adjust the valves. Worth every penny of the few dollars I paid for it.

i finger adjusted em til they seat then back em up slightly then wiggle em up and down to see if theres any movement i try just to get a tiney bit f a viggle then start the motor up listen to is if its too loud go back and tighten it some more ...then valves even after adjusting with the guage are still kinda trikey ..

I adjusted them again. This time I used a feeler gauge .008 mm acording to the book (Clymer). After I adjusted them you could feel a tiny gap when you touched them. On the fly wheel there are only two markings one looks like this F. and the other looks like this .T Well the book says to align the dot of the "T" with the notch in the stator cover....This is TDC. I put everything back together and started it up and it ran fine...I waited until it reached OT and then punched the throttle and it choked and would have died if I had not let up. I set the choke at half and did it again and it acted fine. So I adjusted the mixture one full turn clockwise and it seemed to respond fine. Then it got dark and I shut it off. I bought this bike when I was in High School in "83...Rode it for 3 years without any adjustments and then it was stored in a basement in Arizona for 16 years. I have been tuning and tweeking everything I can think of to get it back to its stock condition. When I checked the play in the valves at TDC there was no play at all when I started, remember they have been set since I bought it in "83. I think with a little more tweeking of the mixture it will be fine. Clymer manual has a procedure to get it idleing correcly and then adjust the mixture until it dies then adjust a certain amount back then then start it and adjust the oposite direction etc etc and you should have the correct settting. The carb was just rebuilt last month and I set the mixture exactly acording to the book at 1 1/2 turn out.

There has to be a more accurate way to set the mixture.

I did notice the plug was back when I pulled....It only has 2 hours on it.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

hrc200x is 100% correct on the measurement....I have a clymer manual also and it says .003 and im sure .008 would cause a slight ping to the motors sound...i use regular feeler gauges and they work fine for me....i got mine at autozone (they are all about a foot long). plenty of breaks left on mine!! (breaks as in breaking off the feeler gauge)
