i am redoing a '83 200x from the ground up and read that the old 3 wheeler racers used to groove the turf tamer tires on the rear that also made them also better for cleaning when riding in muddy conditions.

does anyone have any experience grooving turf tamer tires?

i do have a tire groover and experience grooving hoosier dirt track tires for stock cars.

It seems like there are so many differnt kinds of tires around now compaired to the old days. Back when they used to race 3 wheelers they had to use lawn mower tires because they didnt make any good ones in the small size that racers used.

So if you want a tire that is better at cleaning itself you might want to look at a wooly bogger type. Or any more agressive mud/snow tire.

But if you still want to alter your turf tamers. just cut around the lugs. Most of them are only 2ply so you dont want to go any deeper then where the tire is showing through allready. But you can open up the gaps in the tires to get them to clean better. That part is all solid rubber.

thanks fuzzy

wooly boogers are great tires, thats what i took off and i still have them on my 4-wheeler.

on my 200x i have bored it, installed a race cam,put on a xr200 carb and got a DG xcellorater exhaust system.
i also sandblasted and had everything repainted with new plastic fenders.

i changed to the titan turf tamers 20/11/8 since i changed to 13/38 gearing and was just wondering about grooving patterns
since i spent about $2000 so far (only paid $600 for it when it was 3 years old)

since it is gonna be my new toy i thought i would groove them kinda wild, just lookin' for a pattern.

Oh ok i see.

When you put the xr200 cam in. Did you do it the same time as the bore job?. I was just wondering how much difference it made. Or if you did the motor all at once so you couldnt tell how much of it was actually from the cam.

I am thinking of doing that change to mine. Would you recommend it?.

fuzzy i'm still waiting for my cylinder to get done, i'm just putting everthing back together frame wise right now.

as far as the cam its a BIG ALS cam that i had on the shelf for years, i don't think they are even in business anymore. i'm not sure how good it is,if it sucks i'll get a webcam or something.
i do believe some of the xr cams are the same as the 200x cam and only certain years are different.

the xr part i did use was a 26mm keihin from a 1990 xr200r along with twist throttle and cable from that bike.

when i get it all done i'll post how the old girl goes. its been about 10 years since i rode it last so all i can compare it to is that it went 54mph back then or see how it stacks up to my '89 250 kawasaki mojave. the mojave was 5 mph faster then so i would say or hope the 200x will put a whippin' on it when i'm done.
