I have a 86 200s that seems to idle fine, but when put in gear it sputters and chugs and doesn't want to go anywhere. If I mash the gas it will work it's way through the chugging and then it takes off for a couple feet and dies. Seems to foul the plug. I've cleaned the carb real well and adjusted the idle screws but it seems not to work. Could it be as simple as needing a new plug or is it as I suspect, something a little more involved? Seems like Fuzzy knows his way around these bikes. All help would be apprecaited...
Thanks Ryan

Was this machine running before and just started acting like this?. Or is it something that you just got or havnt had running in a long time?.
When you had the carb apart did you notice what the main jet looked like?. It is the one that screws up into the carb body from inside the float bowl. It may be plugged or maybe the wrong jet in it.
Also you want to run a small wire through all the airways and jets in the carb to make sure there isnt anything plugged in there.
The idle miture jet is the one underneath the front of the carb. That one adjusts how much fuel you get from idle to about half throttle. It should be turned in and them backed about about 1 1/4 -1 1/2 turns. Then set your idle speed on the side of the carb until it idles at the right rpm. And then try it.
If the carb is completely clean and all airways are fine and jets are fine. Then you might want to look at other things like the spark advance on the side on the head. That is the thing under the cover that says CDI. It advance the spark as the engine rpm`s goes up. And maybe it has a broken spring.
Or it could be too much play in your timing chain from the chain streching. If you have a manual you can check your timing marks and make sure everything is lined up right.
But start with the simple things first. Like making sure it isnt just your airfilter that is plugged. That can also cause a similar problem and so also can the exhaust being plugged. animals love to build nests in things.

Thanks for the reply.. It is something that I did just pick up. The jets are 100&35 and are clean. I've gone through the carb pretty good and all seems clean and clear. I have the idle mixture(outside front facing up) set at around 1.5/2 turns out.
The timing, I checked for tension with the bolt on top of the case. I tightened it down until it started to make some noise(almost a tapping sound) and figured that was tight enough.
The spark plug is not new and was pretty crudded with carbon so I cleaned it up and it will start on the first pull right after cleaning it and idle just fine. But when put in gear and givin gas it will sputter and chug(not stall though). It does this even when it's not under a load(up on jack stands). But like I said earlier, when you really mash on it, it will work through the chugging to the point where it will try to pull a wheelie but then it dies and will not start again until the plug has been recleaned.
I will check the advance for broken springs. That's something I have not yet..
Thanks Ryan

Also i would get a new plug for it just to make sure that is ok.
The jets are the right ones.
According to the manual the idle mixture the one in front and underneath should be 2 1/4 turns out. So it may be a little too lean.
And the clip on the needle jet should be on the 3rd notch. You might want to unsrew the top of the carb and check it out also in case it has been changed.
Fuzzy's right your running to lean.
