85 110, not engaging upper gears - does engage 1st from neutral, as per previous post. I ran cleaner through it, drained, and put in Mobil 1 5W30, hoping to free it up. No luck ( as you predicted, Dads - but it was still worth a shot )

Seems like the arm isn't grabbing the shift drum. The lever feels like it slips, or misses - the few times there is good resistance on the lever ( feels like it 'catches' ), it grabs the next gear OK. I'm guessing that means the forks are probably OK but the shift drum and/or arm are shot.

Two quick questions, and I'll quick wasting your time on this . .

(I had the trike up on a crate, with the rears off the ground )

1. Can the shift drum be pulled and replaced by pulling the left
engine cover? or do you have to pull the motor and split the
cases.
2. ( hoping against hope ) I can get the gears to engage with
the engine off, by working the rear wheels forward and back.
There seems to be a lot of creep in the clutch, even after I tried adjusting it looser, even all the way loose. It will let the engine
idle in gear with the wheels stopped- it's not locked. With the enginer idling, in gear, you can stop the wheels, but you have to grab them pretty hard. And the tranny won't shift with the engine running, except occasionally. With the engine off, you CAN get it to engage gears by rocking the wheels back and forth. Also, engine off, in gear, the wheels won't rotate forwards. Will rotate backwards. Any chance the
clutch is not right ? Or is this normal ?

Guess that's it

again, appreciate your time. . .
Once I get this tranny licked, I'll have a really nice little toy.
Starts,run, looks good. Need gears, though . . .

I figured out alot of thing, but gears is not one of them. I had a bike with that problem I worked and worked on until I finally said piss on this and sold it, Although it was uppers it would **** from 5th to 4th every time I shifted. To much stress involved for me, although someone else might have more experience in this subject unlike me, sorry.

It sure sounds like it is in the shift shaft or shift drum. I think you are going to end up having to pull it off and open it up.

It isnt that bad if you have a manual you could probable do it in a day.

you will have to pull your right and left covers. left to check the shift shaft. right to check the clutch. from what you say you have no intrenal probs with the shift cam, forks, or gears. sounds more like the bracket over the end of the shift cam is out of alinement so that the shift ratchet is not working right.

Let us know what you come up with i am very curious of what the problem turns out to be.

It started shifting today - now I have all four gears engaging -
still getting an occasionaly false neutral, but I'm hoping that will
work out like the other problems did.

As you originally predicted, Fuzz, it must have just been gunked up. I ran degunk, then the lightest synthetic I could find, and just kept working at it.

I did notice, when it was not shifting, that if you let the lever
'pop' back up rather than just leting it up normally, that it
was more likely to grab the next gear. So, I figured that meant that some part of the mechanism was hanging up.

So, with some patience . . . ( actually, a very real desire not
to tear it down - as in "c'mon baby, c'mon . . c'mon " )
it eventually free'd up on its own.

So now I just have to put rear brake shoes on it, get the
headlight working, and it's almost perfect. I did notice a
metallic clanging coming from the rear - like there are loose
wrenches rattling around ( but there aren't ) - I haven't checked the chain slack yet, so I'm hoping that's it.
