View Full Version : Troubles removing the camshaft on a 110.

I have been trying to get the cam shaft out of my 110 head, but it is clearly getting cought on something, preventing it from just sliding right out.
I have:
• removed the contact breaker
• breaker assembly, lead wire
• marked the back plate possition for easy reassembly
• removed the automatice advance unit
• removedthe camshaft dowel pin (tiny little booger)
• removed the breaker outer casting
• removed the recoil assembly
• set the timing marks on the rotor to T (top dead center)
• removed the right side cover (rocker arm side)
• removed the two bolts that hold the camshaft to the sprocket
Now, it should just slide right out, correct?!?!?! I haven't released the cam chain tensioner yet, but I don't think that would be the problem... would it? I mean, doesnt the cam just slide through the center of the sprocket?
I am so confused... Can anyone point out a reason the camshaft doesnt just slide out?
Here's just some picts I took for referrence during the reassembly, once i get it all done:

i wish it was that easy. those picts are in order. The last one shows sorta where I am at... only i have already removed those two bolts holding the camshaft flange to the camshaft pulley. I can get the shaft to come out about an 1/8 or 1/4 inch then it gets hung up on something......

oops forgive me then you want the guts of the head:D ok there are 1 or 2 bolts ( should be on timing chain wheel) take those off and remove wheel( sprocket)...this will release your timing chain from the head thus releasing all guts of head...including cam... it might be easier to remove whole head your last picture shows your chain is still attched?

I have removed the two bolts holding the cam flange on the sprocket. My Haynes manual says once those are removed, the camshaft should slide out through the hole in that camshaft sprocket. Again, this is where I am finding trouble. The camshaft doesnt want to do so. Once the camshaft is removed, then I can take the chain off the sprocket and pull the sprocket out. Or atleast that's the way it appears they want me to do it in this book. But, like ai said before... no camshaft cooperation.
Maybe i should get out my SawzAll. :lmao:

I'm not sure, but the head might have cut outs for the cam lobes, while pulling out on the cam turn it somehow. Does the sprocket look like the cam would fit through it? Is there any dots on the cam sprocket? If there is a dot try putting the dot directly forward and pulling it out.

Great points! I can't tell if the sprocket looks like the cam will go through it because the flange covers up the entire hole in the sprocket. As for a dot or an "O" as the Haynes manual states... I see none. By the looks of the screws and bolts I have encountered during the disassembly, it's evident someone has been in there prior to me, so I am wondering if they put the sprocket back on backwards so this "O" is on the inside on the engine, not the outside. I will try to rotate the cam to see if it is getting hung up on the design of the head, but it's awefully tight.
Here are some more pictures I just snapped for referrence. Anyone see anything I may not have known to remove thus far? Any thoughts are appreciated.

The timming chain and sprocket need to come off....completely. on the bottom of the 110 is the nut looks like you dump oil( not that one) the other one....this helps loosen it......your rockers need to be removed....your goal is to get to this point...gimme 5 min for picts to illustrate behind the wheel you will see how it comes out lined up like hrx says

right where my finger you can see the notch where you will need to line up the cam to slide it out(this is a 70 head but the format is the same)
