hey,
jeez i haven't posted anything in a long while. well a buddy of mine says he will sell me his 1980 xr 500 for $50, i said sure, now what iwas thinkin was putting this motor in a trike and haveing one hell of an offroad/trail trike. does anyone have any suggestions for a trike. I was thinking along the lines of a 350x, but do you think i can find a cheap one. NOPE! i haven't really given it much thought i would put the motor in a rolling 250r chassis if i had one kickin around. well thats my most evil plan for the time being, just thought i'd share it, and maybe get a few good ideas from you guys.
thanks

Sounds like you've got the start of a killer trike. unfortunately with so many 350x motors going into those damn 250x swaps it shouldn't be too hard to find a 350x chassis.

keep us updated!

Yup have one of these sitting in my shop now. Its not completel, but its close. It was not an easy task, at all. It required cutting/extending/re-welding the frame, cutting off the exsting motor mounts and spreading them about an inch, Rasing the gas tank mounts another good inch, maybe inch and a half. Custom exhaust work (Not that bad) A little manuvering to make the sprockets line up (Not that bad), and all kinds of litte misc things. I still have to move the seat mounts around and up to make the seat sit on the tank right. After that I'll be near completion. Another thing, unless you make an airbox, and use something like radiator hose to work as the airbox boot, you'll have to run a clamp on, open airfilter. Which sucks, but thats the way it has to be. I'll maybe make an aluminum airbox down the road for it. The hande bars are also VERY close to hitting the gas tank when they are turned to the fartherest either direction (That would be since the tank was raised and reposistioned so that it was not sitting on top of the carb. If you've noticed 350X carbs are flat on the top, and the XR's are not. This is why I had to raise the tank, and am going to have to raise the seat) Its alot of work, and I haven't got to ride it yet, but I think it'll be worth it.

Ok, here they are. I gotta tell you guys though, in the current state it looks like pos. And my camera doesn't help things. The fenders will be cut, and I will be getting new handle bars. After I get it together to see that it runs well I'm going to take it all back apart again and polish, and paint every single peice possible. I've already had to torch on my paint job on the frame twice :(

<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/EngineFrame1.jpg">This is to show how the exhaust ports line up. </a> And No, The frame isn't bent, its an optical illusion from the camera's posistion (I checked, hehehe)

<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/NakedLeft1.jpg">No seat, fenders, or gas tank </a>
<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/Rear1.jpg">The Rear of it (What most people will be seeing, hehehe) </a>
<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/Right1.jpg">A right side shot of it </a>
<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/RightFront1.jpg">A Right Front shot that is terrible </a>
<A href="http://www.3wheelerworld.com/remotepictures/500X/Swingarm1.jpg"> My Swingarm painted. </a>

Maybe I can ride it before Christmas. I hate waiting on money to come in so I can spend it :D

I bought a 85 R chassis from a guy who put a yamaha TT 550 in it. When I went to pick it up it still had the motor in. He had allot of problems with the chain/swingarm. The frame and swingarm are cut up a little but it should make a nice project some day.

I used a stock 350X frame to start with, and cut it, and extended it 3 inches at the top and botom. Its still a really tight fit, but it fits. I would really reccomend if someone else was to do it to make your life easy when your working on the motor in the chassis and make it 4 inches. Its a royal in the in arse to even change the spark plug.

TT550 in an R chassis? Yikes, that almost seems like more trouble then it would be worth. I have my sprockets lined up really good. Somethign to keep in mind, if worsest comes to worsest, you can machine a little off the sprocket hub to compensate.

Nice looking trike, it looks like it was a fun prodject. I noticed that you have Carlson Trail Pro's on the rear, I just bought a set of my own and they really hook up and bite pretty much any terrain just to let you know:D
