my front axle snapped saturday when riding. fortunately i was puttin through the jungle in super low and nothing happened, might have been a different scenario if i was doing a high speed burn somewhere so i am thankful for being alright now. at any rate, is a front axle one of those things you don't want to buy from a salvage yard and that you are better off buying new? after mine snapped in half saturday night i'm hesitant to buy one from a salvage yard and pay 40 bucks instead of 60 then have that used one that i saved 20 bucks on snap in half as i take a 35mph face plant into hardpack dirt. any factors that would lead to abnormal wear and fatigue on the front axle? it snapped clean in half right on the inside of the right fork leg (right fork leg when sitting on the bike). ride on

Wow:eek:
I have never heard of that before. Had it been jumped hard or something to break it????
I wouldnt even think of going used for $40.00 if it was like $10.00 or something i might give it a try. But if you were going to spend that much i would go with the new one for $60.00. That is pretty cheap compaired to hospital bills if one was to break at 50 mph.

nah not jumped hard at all, i stopped doing that after my peg snapped and i ran over my foot. now i stick to hill climbing and tearing it up in the backwoods. sometimes i try to knock dead trees over by plowing into them with the front end, that might have something to do with it, but still, the front tire absorbs most of that shock so i really have no idea. it snapped clean in half and i was doin like 1mph when it happened. i wheelied the bike over a downed tree then snappooey, it breaks in half.

Maybe the tree knocking down had somthing to do with the axle breaking?

Abusing things is usually the most fun thing, i used to ride my Yamaha Trials bike throught these old rotten fences that used to be in the woods the front fender was sooo broken!, I also towed cars with it and all sorts of crazy stuff like carrying 2 other people, (it was only a 1 seater at best!)

i'm thinking i'll just buy a new front axle, that extra 20 bucks could mean the difference between thousands in hospital bills and rehab or having nothing happen at all....

Buy a new one. The previous owner could have abused theirs, too. I would think rough treatment would be cumulative - something you hit five years ago could have damaged the axle and it was slowly reaching the breaking point. I don't think a front axle cares much how fast you go, anyway. Weight is weight; and when I go fast, all my weight is trying to catch up. Stopping is entirely different, though.:D

takes some guts to plow over stuff with a 3 wheeler. i had to get 5 stiches on my knee from a stupid little crappy tree that some how snapped up, because i was torquin on a three wheeler (the good ol alt125). anyway, ill save that for the 4wheelers now (if i ever get the 250x working).
as for the axle...if youre going to spend 40 for a used, might as well get a new one. id slap a 3/4" carrage bolt on there an call it fixed  but every one is different...just kidding silly.
i dont think a front axle breaking like that is too common, but heat can fatuge anything (bearing seize ever?). also, just common stress, the slightest freqency of a tiny bit of flex can reeeek havioc on some harder steels, or any steel. but the harder the steel, usualy the more brittle and finicky.
who the f knows , ya know?
