I was out last weekend and lost second gear, All others work, but second just grinded so I shut her down and took her home. I took apart the upper end and ther was no damage (phew) but my problem now is that it looks like i need a special socket to get the clutch pack out and whatever the other thing is beside it also has a nut that would use a 4 prong socket, does anyone know where i can get one for cheap? I don't have a manual so I can't find a part # for it to order it from honda. Please help, Also, Do you suppose I may have been lucky enough to just trash 1 or 2 gears or do you think i will find more when i get in there?

Sounds more like a slightly bent shift fork, most of the time you will hear a loud snap when the teeth brake off or locking ears, the grinding is the ears not locking into the holes in the gear. Not to costly, not to had, more a pain in the aho . you have to tare down almost the hole eng. and it requires a manual.

Hey you said you build SB and BB engines? What do those letters really mean? Are they to classify racing motors or what?

yeah small and big block, I had (sold her too much $$) a 1985 Jeep CJ-7 and built one hell of a little 383 chev for it (412 hp and 453ft/lbs) at the rear wheels! but I kept breaking drive shafts and axles, it was my daily driver and I used up all my money on the damn motor and was unable to afford beefier drive train, being as I was just out of high school at the time, I Now have a 1979 firebird formula that I am building a 454cid motor for but thats slow going for now, I have a payment on my current car and a 3 wheeler to get going first! so money is a little tight, but hey, gotta pay to play

My uncle made one of those 4 prong sockets out of a regular hex socket. Just get a socket the exact size of the 4 prong nut and grind away everything except where the 4 prongs should be, it wasn't perfect, but it worked.

Why not build a Pontiac 455? Maybe the cost. But remember Buick,Olds,Pontiac transmissions does not bolt up to Chevy. Different bolt pattern. Unless you have the universal bell housing.
How about I sell you a 70 Buick 455? Complete stock( carb to oil pan)I know it should bolt in.
As far as the socket. Make one or buy one.

May need an impact screwdriver to remove some of the stubborn phillipshead screws...Like oil pump...

wow this one is back from the dead...gotta agree that a 454 in a Firebird is highly gay.

You need a Pontiac 400 in that bad lad, all the way. If it were me i would throw a 350 in it and a 327 crank and de-stroke the motor. Just my .02

You forgot to say 327 rods too. OH. it has to be a 68 327 also. 66-67 327 was small journal. If you look it up. They say there was a 69 327. Acutally they were left over 68. 327 rods and crank makes it a 327.
350 would make more torque and horsepower.
I built a 327. On paper(blueprinted) it would have made 395hp. Actual output was 315 at rear wheels. I think that equals around 375 at crank.

what you do is you mill down the block .xxx i dont know the exact math, i have a friend who has a de stroked pontiac 400 small block with 327 rods in it, and then you run the 400 pistons and by making the stroke the smaller it pounds horsepower, but is not a real good daily driver, but it does about 140 in the 1/4 mile, pretty fast for what it is, but a lot of machine work and know how.

MAybe I learned something? Never mixed other engine parts.(i.e. Chevy,Pontiac,etc...)
Used to (I think) take 327 crank and put in 283 and make a 302. I rode in a factory 69 Camero 302, 4 speed, 4.11 posi(to the best of my memory 4.11) Was a very fast and powerful car. Would melt tires off in 3rd. Only had less than 6,000 miles on car. Don't know where car is now. Wouldn't mind having it...lol
I wish I had all the cars my dad and grandfather EVER owned!!! I would ooohhh so rich now.....
Just a small list of what I remeber.
62 Chevy convertable (original SS), 70 Road Runnner 383, 3 speed, pistol grip shifter, 55 chevy Original powertrain(different paint, actually got 35 MPG on trips!!!6cyl), 57 Chevy Bel Air 4-door, 63 Impala SS, 71 Chevelle(actually Malibu) , and still have this one 57 Chevy Sedan Delivery. A lot more than this..1 mentionable 66 1/2 mustang convertable.

Most small blocks we built had MIN 350 hp at crank. Had a 307 (we bought in a car) had 315 at crank.. Solid lift cam, 780 Holley carb, Had an aluminuim intake(NOT edelbrock). Rand good, had to adjust valves it seemed once a month.

That 327 I built. had a Comp 280 cam blueprinted with 395HP. Install a .510 lift cam and power went to 425. Oh...the heads was ported, bigger valves, 11:1 compression, 780 Holley, roller rockers, deburred block (inside).

I didn't mean to take over this thread with car stuff. It is just like bikes. I like talking about them. I have a longer history working on cars than bikes.
I didn't even see the 2002 date on original post until 250sx posted comment about it being dead.....

this is also what i did exept i used a regular 21 mm socket and it worked for me.
otherwise you can find the socket you need on ebay for right around $20 with shipping i believe.
