I am confused. Do you want to reset them? If so, losen BOTH sets of clamps, and spread them with a thick flat screw driver or something. That will allow the fork tube to slide up and down to reposition them. Then line up the top mark, or crack,........if you will........to the top of the top clamp. Tighten one clamp enough to hold it, stand back, and if it looks right, do the same to the other side, make sure tire and bars are straight, everything is aligned, then tighten to spec. (tight):)
If it's inturnal up and down movement .(fork tube in fork slider ) You maybe getting low on oil in the shock. it gets air in with the oil, the air will compress the oil will not so you get a little up and down movement. if you hit a bump it will feel like your handle bars jerk to one side because there responding at differant times.
thanks for the replies guys but thats not the problem its the big nut in the middle of the top clamp it is as tight as it will go but still have up & down slop. thanks for your help
You have to take off the top clamp . the top bearing race screws on and off . you snug it down on bearings. the top nut just holds the top clamp in place. have your front tire a 1/2 inch off floor back off top race to see lower bearings and gease then gease top reassemble  Oh watch out the bearings are loose and my fall out if dry.
ok thats what i was doin wrong:doh:
Thats not the only thing you were doing wrong.:demon: You weren't asking the right question, The thing that goes up through the frame is the steering stem, what it goes through is the head. should have said my front end is loss to the frame would have got the answer quicker. your welcome
