Im assuming you are working on a honda. The hole goes to the inside (I think). I always put the new filter in so that it is same as the old one I take out

I just looked at the picture in my 350X manual, now I am not so sure. Im looking at the picture in the 250sx manual, and at a loose oil filter. I was incorrect. The hole with the rubber seal goes on the outside, and the spring goes on the inside between the filter and the case.

ok thanks, looking at it, iam thinking the pump pumps oil out(so thats what the hole is for) up the line to the cooler then on the head. thanks though

On my Big Red the closed end is pointing towards the engine. You should be able to slide it on your finger and slide it into the spring and try to put the plug back on with the spring working against you HAHA thats how mine is set up
