I just pulled the piston on my 1984 YTM 200EL. Problem was it was smoking really bad. Still had good compression just smoked so bad that you could hardly stand to ride it.

Anyway - pulled the head and cylinder. The piston has no scars and is still really close to standard piston specs. The cylinder walls are in great shape- no scars - they look great. I was just going to hone the cylinder and replace the rings on the original piston - do a valve job and put it back together.

I called around to get the piston rings. One dealer told me that if I just replace the rings no matter how good I think the piston and cylinder is - the wheeler will be smoking again within 30 minutes of riding time. He said no matter what it looks like you need to bore and replace piston.

Any opinions?

Thanks

Yea tell the guy he is full of sh#t. I would never replace the piston unless it showed signs of needing it. Big scratches, going over sized, hole in the middle, cracked, loose wrist pin. I have reringed many engines in my day. And have had to replace only a couple of pistons. And i never have had to rering them again. Or had them smoke 30 minutes after replaceing them. Actually i usally get rid of the machine before they ever need rings again. You should call the dealer back and tell them to quit letting 16 year old kids answer the phones that have never worked on a motor before.

Your local dealer is full of it. Sounds to me like he wanted to pad tha sale a little. I am also getting ready to do a top end on my 225DR. Let us know how you make out.
